Kitchen and Grocery Play
Play kitchens are popular toys, and for good reason! Your child sees you working in the kitchen up to three times a day, so it's only natural that they want to carry out the same tasks they see you doing. While food preparation and running errands seem to us to be mundane activities, your child doesn't see it that way. They want to be just like you, and this is an opportunity for them to do just that.
We started with this kitchen when G was about sixteen months and stocked it with lots of play food and utensils. A year later we got her a shopping cart and her play food took on a whole new life as she stocked and shopped at her grocery store.
If you're short on space or don't love having your house look like you're running a daycare, you may be hesitant to get a mini-kitchen, however if you're going to invest in one big toy, a play kitchen is a great choice. We use ours daily and all the play food does triple duty in kitchen, restaurant, and grocery play.
G's current obsession with grocery play started with the introduction of the shopping cart. I very briefly considered a more elaborate grocery set up, but it really isn't necessary. We create our 'store' by simply turning our coffee table sideways to create aisles, and the couch and table become the shelves. G checks out by bringing her purchases to me or my husband, and then we 'scan' her items and bag them. We make sound effects and she pays with her credit card. She has several zero-balance gift cards that she keeps in a wallet she received last Christmas, along with her own little backpack-because Mommy always carries a backpack.
This is the kitchen we have- and love!
Our play food collection includes:
Melissa and Doug Food Groups
Melissa and Doug Fridge Food
Melissa and Doug Store and Serve Frozen Food Resealable Cloth Bags with Wooden Play Food Melissa and Doug Cutting Food
I love that the food groups set comes with storage boxes. We keep them in the play fridge.
Every kitchen needs cookware and silverware, too!
If you're looking to have your play food multitask, I highly recommend a grocery cart. We love this one because it looks like the real deal.
If you're going to go all-in on the grocery store, this is a really fun set. We don't have it at home, but G has enjoyed it at our local play place.
